The city of Eberswalde is in a state of transition – away from a shrinking city to an attractive location where developments from the nearby metropolis of Berlin are taken up in a positive and dynamic way. Eberswalde is facing the questions of how to become a city of tomorrow that is green, climate-adapted and sustainable, social, modern and in close exchange with its inhabitants.

In order to involve its urban society in a comprehensive participatory process on the future direction of urban development, Eberswalde successfully applied in the competition of the state initiative “My City of the Future” of the Brandenburg Ministry of Infrastructure and Federal State Planning (MIL).

At the core of the project is the “Future Assembly” – a committee of 32 randomly selected citizens of Eberswalde who deliberate and formulate policy recommendations on seven relevant future issues and topics. The results are summarised in a citizens’ report and integrated into the urban development policy as well as into the forward projection of the Integriertes Stadtentwicklungskonzept (INSEK).

The nexus Institute is the office of the “Future Assembly” and conceptualises, moderates and documents the meetings of the Future Assembly and accompanies the citizens in their work.
