nexus will act as one of the implementing institutes of the second nationwide Citizens’ Assembly.

Following a suggestion by the President of the Bundestag, Wolfgang Schäuble, the Council of Elders of the Bundestag has decided to hold another Citizens’ Assembly. As a result of an agreement between the Bundestag parliamentary groups, the theme of the Citizens’ Assembly is “Germany’s role in the world”.

For the Citizens’ Assembly, 160 participants selected at random from all over Germany will meet on ten dates between January 13th and February 20th, 2021. They will deliberate on various thematic aspects of Germany’s role in the world, ultimately developing and adopting recommendations for the Bundestag. The recommendations will be recorded in a citizens’ report and presented to the patron of the Citizens’ Assembly, Wolfgang Schäuble, and the Bundestag on March 19th, 2021, so that they can be incorporated into the foreign policy work of the Bundestag before the end of this legislative period.

Due to the current pandemic situation, the nationwide Citizens’ Assembly is taking place online for the first time.

The Citizens’ Assembly “Germany’s role in the world” tests and consolidates the participation procedure “Citizens’ Assembly”, which has already shown success in 2019 with the participation of nexus nexus in the first “Citizen’s Assembly Democracy”.

The aim is to continue to provide insights into the extent to which the Citizens’ Assembly instrument is suitable for supporting parliamentary work and how such a participation format can be designed in the future.

nexus, together with ifok and IPG, is conducting the Citizens’ Assembly, which was initiated and funded by Mehr Demokratie e.V. and EsgehtLOS!
