The availability of public Wi-Fi in Berlin is currently limited to individual locations and providers. The city of Berlin now wants to use the participation project to record the needs of the Berlin population with regard to expanding the offer. Public Wi-Fi offers the opportunity to access the internet in public places such as cafés, cultural institutions and local and long-distance transport stations. This can be helpful for using online services or accessing information while travelling. These can also be prepared by providers and made available in the form of apps or websites. Citizen participation in Berlin’s neighbourhoods has been running since September 2024. Employees of the company commissioned to implement the participation programme visit locations in the twelve districts and offer citizens the opportunity to contribute their needs, wishes and ideas. On behalf of the Berlin Senate Chancellery, the nexus Institute is carrying out online participation via mein.berlin.de in addition to on-site participation in the twelve Berlin districts.
