Volkan Sayman studied social sciences in Marburg and science studies and sociology of technology in Berlin. His work focuses on the genesis of technologies and knowledge, the interactions between applications of ‘artificial intelligence’ (e.g. automated vehicles, robots, virtual reality applications) and social structures as well as the research and practical field of deliberative democracy.

Volkan Sayman worked for four years as a research assistant in the subproject “Doing Mini-Publics” of the Berlin Collaborative Research Center “Refiguration of Spaces”. The sub-project qualitatively analysed how knowledge is created and disseminated in the global practice field of deliberative democracy. In a further step, we analysed how infrastructures for archiving and formatting knowledge affect the practical implementation of citizen participation. In the course of this, Volkan Sayman ethnographically researched the global expert network “Democracy R&D” and coordinated the production and visualization of a database containing as many as possible mini-public cases on a global scale (https://sfb1265.github.io/mini-publics/).

In addition to regularly teaching courses at the Institute of Sociology Berlin, Volkan Sayman is a reviewer for scientific journals (e.g. Berliner Journal für Soziologie, Science Technology and Human Values, Innovation: The European Journal of Social Science Research).
