Numerous projects for the structural, social and cultural development of the city have been developed with extensive informal participation of the urban society. So far, however, there are no clear criteria as to when which form of citizen participation should be realised. Experiences at the federal level show that systematic and early citizen participation is an important basis for successful urban development. In recent years, citizen participation has increasingly become an integral part of local, regional and state-wide decision-making processes. At the municipal level, citizen participation is increasingly being integrated into the way administrations work. In order to strengthen these developments in the long term and to make the interaction between politics, administration and citizens efficient and sustainable, the city of Braunschweig has decided to develop guidelines and principles for citizen participation. The guidelines for citizen participation are being developed in a working group consisting of ten people, some of them selected at random, who are representatives of civil society, politics and administration. In two sessions, discussions will take place on which guidelines and principles should form the basis for citizen participation in Braunschweig in the future.
